How many people have been killed by self-driving cars?
How many people have been killed by self-driving cars? Out of the 419 autonomous vehicle crash reports submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), as of January 15, 2023, 156 were in truly autonomous, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems-equipped vehicles. Across the 419 crashes, the NHTSA recorded 18 definite fatalities. When it comes to any accident involving self-driving cars, I wonder where the priority lies. Is it with the passengers or the pedestrians? Well, it depends on who you ask.
A study from MIT found that most people would prioritize younger people over older people and humans over animals in the event of an accident.
Science magazine found that the majority of people surveyed thought it would be ethically better for autonomous cars to sacrifice their occupants rather than crash into pedestrians.
I’m curious. What do you think?
